21/03/09 Skills Building Workshop for People Living with HIV

Place: Kenya

On March 21, 2009, GCM together with SAFUA, a community based organisation (CBO), organised a skills building workshop for people living with HIV particularly women in Kibwezi district, Eastern Kenya. The workshop was attended by 30 people, 24 women and 6 men drawn from 5 local CBOs.

The objective of the workshop was to equip the participants with basic knowledge and skills in woman-initiated HIV prevention tools that are under research and explore the extent of access to existing tools. The discussions included a review of the status of the epidemic in Kenya with an emphasis on Eastern province, exploring the gender disparities and the reasons that predispose women to HIV infection in the region. Current access, use and the existing attitudes towards the female condom as a woman-initiated HIV prevention tool also formed part of the discussions. The clinical trial process, introduction to microbicides and potential benefit to women living with HIV as well as social and ethical concerns were discussed. The workshop concluded with participants voicing the need for more skills building to understand HIV prevention research especially ARV based prevention. For more information see the full report.

POSITIVE WOMENS NETWORK (PWN) WORKSHOP

Participants of the Positive Women’s Network workshop The workshop was attended by 34 participants of the Positive Women’s Network and the discussion yielded lots of interesting questions for advocacy. The presentations varied from introductory teaching slides to more scientific presentations on the mechanisms of action of microbicides. Topics covered included the basics of microbicides, potential benefits for positive women,
how the clinical trial process is conducted, ethical and social concerns associated with some prevention methods like PREP and finally drawing up some advocacy messages and mapping a way forward. Largely the topics were well received and it is hoped that a group of interested individuals will be selected, who will be part of the larger training of trainers and this process will be facilitated through the executive director for the Positive Women’s Network. Read more about GCM's Positive Women's Network workshop in Dr. Dube's full report.

20/12/08 - 23/12/08 The International Federation for Medical Students Association (IFMSA) Regional Congress

Seven junior doctors and thirteen medical students attended a workshop on microbicides and HIV prevention technologies for women held by GCM during the International Federation for Medical Students Association (IFMSA) Regional Congress in Durban last month. By introducing the basics of microbicides and advocacy, the workshop promoted discussion of the ethics of clinical trials and acceptability of the products if successful.
Workshop facilitator Samu Dube noted that ‘Whilst obtaining information on issues such as microbicides and PREP is a starting step, it is necessary to take this information further for advocacy purposes. This is especially important for groups of people whose professional standing leans mainly on curative medicine. Shifting such paradigms needs a positioning that displays clearly too health care workers, and indeed medical students that they too could be advocates.’

The workshop also showcased the materials developed by GCM and explained the capacity building and collaboration systems that GCM uses to support new advocates in the field. Read more about GCM's workshop at IFMSA in Dr. Dube's full report.

8/12/08 - 11/12/08 International Conference on AIDS & STIs in Africa

Place: Dakar, Senegal

The theme for the International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA) was “Africa’s Response: Face the facts.” Africa's leading forum for the discussion of developments and trends in the HIV field, the 2006 ICASA attracted almost 5,000 activists, policy makers, researchers, academics, clinicians, advocates and donors – most of them from Africa. As international experts evaluated the current state of the epidemic, prevention was very much at the fore with emphasis on the many vulnerable groups that continue to emerge.

Although behavior change and vaccine research and advocacy were featured, the conference highlighted the need for a stronger voice for microbicides and other prevention options for women. GCM staffer Samu Dube was present to highlight our commitment and work in this area.

For more information, please see Dr. Dube’s report of The Campaign's presence at ICASA

02/12/08 Film Screening of Civil Society Organisations

Place: Nairobi, Kenya

On 2nd December 2008, the Global Campaign for Microbicides hosted a screening of the video In Women’s hands at the PATH office in Nairobi. This World AIDS Day-linked event was attended by 6 organisations. After the video screening, the participants held a discussion on various woman-initiated HIV prevention options including female condoms, microbicides and PrEP.
The participants felt that more targeted work on the female condom was needed as well as need to address the challenges that hinder women from accessing the female condom ranging from price, inadequate supplies and education for both women and men of its usage.

Microbicides and PrEP give hope for the future however issues around level of efficacy, need for prescription if they are ARV based concerns around resistance and potential for stigma especially for PrEP use were some of the key concerns that were raised.

Overall the civil society members felt that new HIV prevention tools are needed to expand the options available. Community education and involvement need to be a critical part of the search for these tools.

KENYA

The International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM) organised a briefing session on microbicides targetting diverse stakeholders including government officials, donors, researchers, advocates and civil society representatives on 12th May 2006 in Nairobi, Kenya. During the event IPM gave updates on the status of microbicides research and development. The Kenyan Minister for Health, Hon. Charity Ngilu said that the government was committed to supporting microbicides development. The African Microbicides Advocacy Group (AMAG) gave a presentation on its activities in the region. AMAG noted that while there were trials going on in different countries in the region, there was need to strengthen linkages between various stakeholders so as to share lessons especially for community involvement.

NIGERIA

On 9th June 2006, the Nigerian HIV Vaccine and Microbicide Advocacy Group (NHVMAG) reached over 100 medical women in Nigeria during the Medical Women Association of Nigeria's ordinary general meeting. All those present received resource materials which introduced them to microbicide and HIV vaccine issues. On 24th June, NHVMAG attended a gathering of over 220 resident doctors from all over Nigeria and held a two hour session with the doctors to discuss microbicide and HIV vaccine issues. The event generated a great deal of interest in the microbicide research and development process, and a principal investigator of an ongoing microbicide trial was on hand to answer questions.

NHVMAG also reached out to people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs) at two programmes. It participated in a nationally organised candlelight memorial programme to discuss about microbicide and HIV vaccine and the roles for PLWHA in the research and development process. The organisation also partnered with the National Association of People Living with HIV/AIDS through the African Council of AIDS Services Organiations supported ATPP programme to build skills of over 20 PLWHAs with respect to NPT issues. This in turn has been yielding results as a PLWHA reported discussing about NPT during one of her organised television programmes in her state following the training. The response has always been overwhelming. NHVMAG hopes to reach out to communities of medical students, women, men, sex workers, clinical trial participants and a host of others during the coming year. – Adopted from AMAG e-forum (posted by Morenike Ukpong)
