Welcome to Global Campaign Europe!

Global Campaign Europe is the European arm of the Global Campaign for Microbicides. GC Europe has three specific aims:

  • To build European political support for increased investment in microbicide research and development
  • To create a supportive policy environment in Europe for the timely development, introduction and use of microbicides
  • To prepare European NGOs and other civil society actors to take an active role in advocating on behalf of end-users, the public interest and communities involved in clinical trials

Global Campaign Europe offers on-going support and capacity building assistance to NGOs and community networks through frequent contact, trainings and technical assistance, as well as through the provision of updates and briefing papers. For full details, contact us at the secretariat.

We are particularly committed to expanding the body of available educational materials and to assuring that our compendium of tools, materials and resources are readily accessible, translated and otherwise adapted to make them as useful as possible to our campaign sites and other European partners. All our current materials are available at our European Download centre.

Endorsers and Partners

GCM adheres to the WHO definition of the European region, which includes 53 countries stretching from Russia to Israel and from Iceland to Tajikistan: http://www.euro.who.int/countryinformation

GCM welcomes endorsement of the Campaign from NGOs, civil society and community based networks in any country in the world. Those that are based within the European region as defined by WHO will be invited to participate in GC Europe.

Within Europe, our strategy is to concentrate our cultivation of partners and advocacy efforts in those countries that are likely to be donors to microbicides and in which major research programs of clinical trials are taking place. It is unlikely that microbicide effectiveness trials will take place in Europe, but Phase 1 trials may take place in several European cities.

European Union

Working with the EU will contribute substantially to all three goals. Our resources and staff time will be focused predominantly on the institutions of the European Union, and therefore the member states. In order to work effectively with the EU institutions, it is important to have an active presence in as many EU member states as possible.

Donor countries

In these countries, we will be pro-active on all three goals in terms of recruitment to the Campaign, the capacity building of partners and lobbying national governments. We will seek to have at least one partner NGO in each country. Even within the EU, current capacity is stretched. The secretariat will prioritise certain countries according to which holds the presidency of the EU and other political factors.

Non-donor countries

Any NGOs or community networks that endorse the Campaign in these countries will be considered part of GC Europe, however outreach and cultivation will be less intensive. With the assistance of our partners, we will endeavour to disseminate information about microbicides as widely as possible within the region as a whole and in the main languages of the region. We will respond to requests for information, assistance and training from any part of this region provided that resources are in place to support these activities.
