Latin America, South America & the Caribbean

The Global Campaign for Microbicides is a broad-based, international coalition working to accelerate access to HIV prevention options like microbicides. In cooperation with our partners and endorsers, we develop and implement activities that build on the strengths and expertise of our numerous partners, and that move towards our collective goals.

Our Global South advocacy agenda focuses on activities in cultivating partnerships in countries hosting microbicides trials because positive community engagement is needed to support the trials and because trial countries will likely be among the first in which any new products are introduced. Currently, the Global Campaign does not have any ongoing activities in Latin America or the Caribbean as there are currently only a few trials going on in these regions. However, it is still essential that we spread the word about microbicides and the need for new female-initiated HIV prevention options. We invite you to join our extensive global network of advocates throughout the world.

Advocates in Action

Argentina: FEIM

The Foundation of Education and Research for Women (FEIM), a Global Campaign partner in Buenos Aires, brought the issue of prevention options for women to the Fifth National Congress on HIV/AIDS in Argentina in November 2001. With a small grant from the Global Campaign and samples of female condoms donated by the Female Health Foundation, FEIM staff ran an exhibit booth where they passed out buttons and information about microbicides and HIV prevention options for women. They also conducted a survey assessing Congress participants' familiarity with prevention methods for women prior to visiting the FEIM booth.
Of the health professionals and AIDS specialists surveyed, many more were familiar with the female condom than with microbicides, since it is an existing method, and about two-thirds had seen a female condom before. Only about a quarter of respondents were familiar with the concept of microbicides, indicating the potential for awareness raising among providers, professionals, and activists in Argentina.
