Market Projections

The longer-term microbicides market looks promising.

A microbicide that meets the basic needs of women in the industrialised and developing worlds could have a global market size of $0.9 billion by 2011 and double that by 2020, according to an analysis by the Boston Consulting Group.

This is a conservative estimate, as the peak market size estimates assume that less than 10 percent of sexually active women in the developing and industrialised world will use the product. If, however, the products are able to meet a broader set of needs, including those for daily hygiene, vaginal health, and general protection against infection, there is potential to far exceed these forecasts, with a peak market size as large as $5.0 billion.

Eventually, the microbicide market could compare favourably with other popular products
