Petition for Greater Investment in Microbicides
& Prevention Options for Women

Every day approximately 6,800 people contract HIV. Half of them are women. Each year, at least 340 million new infections other than HIV are transmitted through unprotected sex worldwide. The control and treatment of STIs is both a public health imperative and an important intervention for the prevention of HIV. (UNAIDS, 2006)

In the third decade of the AIDS pandemic, we rely on prevention strategies that depend on a partner’s willingness to use condoms. Existing prevention methods are inadequate in the face of the rising infection rates in many parts of the world, especially for women. We need safe, effective prevention options that the individual user controls, to better protect the health of women and men, and to fight the spread of the HIV pandemic.

We, the undersigned, call upon the U.S. government, the European Commission, EU Member States and other national governments to greatly accelerate research into topical microbicides, and to significantly expand efforts the provide and promote the female condom.
