Meet our Staff


The Global Campaign has a small core staff in Johannesburg, South Africa; Nairobi, Kenya; and Washington, DC. We do most of our work in collaboration with our many partner organisations around the world and team up with experienced consultants to achieve project goals.

Staff Bios & Contact Information

 

Yasmin Halima, MPH, Director
Yasmin Halima serves as the Global Campaign for Microbicides' Director. Prior to joining the Campaign, Yasmin worked as a Consultant in HIV, specialising in treatment access in resource-limited countries and the scientific, policy and ethical challenges of developing pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). As Consultant to the AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition (AVAC), Yasmin worked closely with stakeholders engaged with PrEP, including the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), US National Institutes for Health (NIH), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, as well as academic and industry scientists and activists.  

Yasmin was instrumental in establishing the International AIDS Society Industry Liaison Forum (IAS-ILF), a clinical research initiative bringing together pharmaceutical executives with developing world scientists and policy-makers. As Editorial Consultant to NAM, Yasmin took a lead in organising the NAM clinical symposia programme. Yasmin is an active advocate in HIV; a former board member of the European AIDS Treatment Group (EATG) and currently also serves as the Vice-President of the US AIDS Treatment Activist Coalition (ATAC). Yasmin completed her MPH in Global Health at Columbia University, New York, where she continues her academic affiliation by guest lecturing on global health policy. Yasmin was the recipient of the 2010 Lloyds/TSB Asian Women of Achievement Social and Humanitarian Award.  

Dr. Samukeliso Dube, MPH, MD,
African Programme Leader

Dr. Samukeliso Dube (Samu for short) oversees GCM’s work on social mobilization, community involvement, and capacity building in East and Southern Africa. Dr. Dube is a public health physician with more than eight years experience in clinical management, policy, programming and advocacy of public health programs in Southern Africa. She has worked in the HIV/AIDS field with a number of international NGOs, including Oxfam UK and ActionAID, and is a commitee member of Physicians for Human Rights in her home country of

Zimbabwe. Dr. Dube came to GCM from the Infectious Disease Research Unit at the University of Limpopo, where she was a co-investigator on various HIV prevention trials, and manager of the South African Vaccination and Immunization Centre in Medunsa. Dr Dube holds a degree in Medicine and Surgery, a Masters in Public Health, Tropical medicine and Infectious diseases and is a PHD candidate in Public Health.

 

Pauline Irungu, Programme Associate
Based in Nairobi, Pauline works as an organiser and facilitator, strengthening the Global Campaign’s collaborations with community groups and microbicides research teams in eastern Africa. Pauline comes to GCM from the Kenyan AIDS NGOs Consortium (KANCO), where she managed the HIV vaccine preparedness program for civil society organisations and community groups. She has substantial experience in advocacy, networking, documentation and information management.

Pauline holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Sciences from Moi University (Kenya) and is currently pursuing a Masters degree in Sociology and Community Development from the University of Nairobi (Kenya).
 

Nomampondo Barnabas, Programme Officer

Nomampondo Barnabas is a Programme Officer with the Global Campaign for Microbicides in South Africa. Nomampondo has been involved in the HIV&AIDS field since 1997—helping to mobilize communities to fight stigma & discrimination against people living with and affected by HIV&AIDS—and is recognized both internationally and nationally for her expertise. Before joining GCM, she worked with the University of Natal Research Ethics Committee, was involved in various HIV Prevention Trials Network studies

throughout South Africa, assisted in the development of the National Association of People Living with HIV&AIDS’ Disclosure and Acceptance Campaign and advocacy toolkit, and served as a board member for the Gender AIDS Forum. In 2003—in partnership with Medical Care Development International—she conducted a survey to establish baseline indicators for interventions to reduce HIV stigma and discrimination in the Ndwedwe area of South Africa. Most recently, Nomampondo served as the head of the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa’s (CAPRISA’s)Community Programme in Durban.

In addition to her work with GCM, Nomampondo currently serves as a board member for the Aids Legal Network, trustee for the Anglican Aids Health Care Trust, strategic advisor to the Higher Education HIV&AIDS Programme in South Africa, and serves on the Data Safety Monitoring Board of the World Health Organization’s Kesho Bora study.

Stephanie Stuart, MA,
Project Administrator

Stephanie Stuart helps to manage GCM’s overall operations including donor relations and finances. She comes to GCM from the Academy for Educational Development (AED) where she served as a program officer for various USAID-funded global health projects.  Prior to AED, she worked in budgets and contracts at the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) and worked in business development for DPK

Consulting, an organization that implements global administration of justice and rule of law projects.

Stephanie earned a master’s degree in international development and service from Roehampton University, London, and bachelors’ degrees in social sciences and Spanish from the University of Southern California.

Melissa May, MA, APR, Director of Communications
Melissa May leads GCM’s communications team.  She previously served as director of public information for the Population Council, an international NGO, and director of marketing for Digevent, a new media company.  She managed public relations departments at AirTouch Cellular (now Verizon Wireless) and Airborne Express (now DHL).

May has undergraduate and graduate degrees in public relations and marketing from Purdue University and the University of Texas at Austin. She has extensive experience with public affairs, event planning, media relations, community outreach, and sponsorship activities. She is a former president of the Orange County, CA chapter of the Public Relations Society of America and a New York City chapter of Toastmasters.

She recently served as an adjunct professor in the Public Relations & Corporate Communications department at New York University.  Accredited (APR) in public relations, May has conducted media and presentation training and spoken on marketing communications, public relations, and web event management issues around the world. 

Gary Wolnitzek, Program Assistant
Gary Wolnitzek works in the Washington D.C. office to support GCM's communications and capacity building efforts, coordinate Campaign events, and help manage the Campaign’s information resources. Prior to joining the Campaign, Gary was the Programs and Volunteer Services Manager at the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Center of Baltimore and Central Maryland where he oversaw an HIV research project aimed at using social marketing to reduce HIV risk among young men who have sex with men;

an HIV vaccine awareness project; and other LGBT focused programming.

While working at Health Education Resource Organization, (a Baltimore-based AIDS service organization), he co-coordinated the Maryland Campaign for Microbicides. He is a certified HIV prevention counsellor with a Bachelors of Science degree in Health Science from Towson University.


 

Sairumanie Viv Naidoo,
Events and Administrative Coordinator

Sairumanie Viv Naidoo assumes primary responsibility for Global Campaign meetings, conferences, and events in Africa and provides high-level administrative support to GCM’s Africa Program. 

 

Viv has 10 years of experience in Events Management, Business Development, and Communications. She has organized events with many groups, from local to international companies. She is thrilled to be taking a new direction in her career with her move to GCM and looks forward to learning more.

 

Malu Lattab,
Program Associate

As a Program Associate, Malu manages the commitments  and provides support to the Director and Washington DC staff of the Campaign.  Prior to joining the Campaign, she worked at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as  a Program Assistant in the Advocacy division of US Program.  Malu has a Bachelor of Arts degree in History.

 

Precious Pilane,
Program Assistant

Precious is in charge of program administration and provides support to the GCM staff in our Johannesburg office. Precious comes from Civicus World Alliance of citizen participation and brings in experience in working with  global  civil society movements. Precious also worked at Boston college as a data capturer. Precious received a Bachelor of Administration degree from the University of the North where she also worked as a program assistant. 


Deborah Baron, MPH/MIA,
MMCI Coordinator

Deborah Baron lives in Johannesburg, South Africa where she coordinates the Microbicides Media and Communications Initiative (MMCI), a consortium housed at the Global Campaign for Microbicides of microbicide developers, advocates, and clinical research organizations working to improve communications around microbicide research, especially large-scale studies in Africa and other resource-limited setting.

 

Baron has extensive experience in communications, media training, and community and advocate engagement in HIV prevention research. Prior to her work in the prevention field, Baron organized grassroots advocacy campaigns and international collaborations around access to HIV/AIDS treatment and protecting the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS.

Baron has ten years of experience in the HIV/AIDS and human rights advocacy fields. Baron has masters’ degrees from Columbia's School of Public Health and School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), where she studied international health policy and human rights, and a Bachelor of Arts in Politics from UC Santa Cruz.
