The Northwest Microbicide Coalition in Washington State

Welcome to the Northwest Microbicide Coalition (NWMC), the Washington state affiliate of the Global Campaign for Microbicides. Our Coalition is made up of representatives of community-based organizations as well as interested members from the community. We are involved in a broad range of local, regional and national activities to promote and advocate for microbicide development, including:

  • Raising awareness and generating demand for microbicides through presentations and participation in community events, educational forums, and state and regional conferences.
  • Mobilizing political support among state and federal legislators to advance the Microbicides Development Act of 2007. For more information, click here.

The NWMC is available to:

  • Make microbicide presentations to a variety of audiences.
  • Organize or facilitate film screenings of In Women’s Hands, a film that illustrates the global impact of HIV/AIDS and the role of microbicides.
  • Host community forums that incorporate discussions of microbicides.

Get Involved

We welcome the participation of individuals and organizations interested in joining or supporting microbicide advocacy activities. There are many ways you can get involved:

1. Become an active NWMC partner – as an individual or an organization – and attend our monthly meetings to help plan outreach, education and advocacy activities.

2. Join our Action Alert email list and receive notices about legislative actions and upcoming microbicides and/or related events in the Pacific Northwest. Send us an email to sign up.

3. Host an educational or outreach event on microbicides. We can help you organize and provide you with microbicide resources and materials.

4. Help us gain support for the Microbicides Development Act of 2007. Washington Senator Murray has signed on, as well as Representatives McDermott, Smith and Baird. Let them know you appreciate their leadership on this issue with a call or an email. Write or call our other legislators to encourage them to sign on as to the MDA as well! Click here to get involved in legislative advocacy.

5. Attend our next NWMC meeting to get to know the coalition and learn more about microbicides. Meetings are held monthly in Seattle. For more information about meetings contact Jessica Cohen, coalition coordinator.
